I remember the first time I heard this jam in Joel’s car when we were 19. I made him play it, like, 17 times on a trip to and from Meijer to buy fixin’s for matzo pizza and diet coke, because that’s dinner in the dorms. I didn’t particularly love Joel’s taste in music. He was really into show tunes, Cher, Madonna, I mean, typical “I’m comin’ out now that I don’t live in a tiny Wisconsin town” music. So I was really surprised to love something so much that was coming out of his stereo. “What IS THIS?” I kept asking him. It’s called, “Israelites.” “WHAT?” “IS-REAL-ITES!” I had turned it up to an impossible volume.
I was just getting to know Joel in those first few weeks of college, and I’d grow to learn his love for first wave ska as a youth and covet his collection of oversized NYC Ska t-shirts. We’d go on to live together for three years and have lots of memories but this still stands out as being my most musical connection to him.
